Northumberland Golf Print E-mail
Known for its diverse, beautiful countryside, wealth of wildlife and the numerous Castles throughout the area, it is unsurprising that Northumberland has so many excellent Golf Courses.

Northumberland Golf Right on the Scottish Border, where the game was first played, a true sense of tradition and prestige surrounds most of the Northumbrian courses.

Bamburgh Castle’s course, situated on the dramatic coastline and from where four of the county’s Castles can be seen, is ideal for anyone hoping for a slightly unusual layout or simply those who wish to take advantage of the unequalled surrounds. While Bamburgh is a popular destination for many players, the area is sufficiently diverse for anyone wanting a different kind of game.

From the lush countryside close to the Northumberland National Park with a grand view of the Cheviot Hills, to further south for a historic setting next to Hadrian’s Wall, there is bound to be a course to suit the most fastidious of players.

For something more contemporary, Longhirst Hall Golf Club offers three 18-hole courses, designed with an idea to more open play, similar to those found in Florida. Slaley Hall offers a championship 18-hole course, dubbed ‘Augusta of the North’ and it is part of the PGA European Tour.

Seven miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed is Goswick Golf Course. It’s a traditional links course which provides a strong test of your golfing skills. Playable throughout most of the year, it is rarely badly affected by poor weather. During winter, play is always to the full greens, from grass teeing grounds.

A little further south down the coast is Seahouses Golf Course, known as Northumberland’s friendliest golf course. Seahouses is home to arguably two of the finest par threes in North England. Seahouses is a traditional flat links course with a standard scratch of 67.

Many of the courses are attached to Castles, stately homes or prestigious hotels, so whether you are looking for a weekend getaway to indulge your favourite game, or just a round with the friendly nineteenth-hole at the end, there are few counties in the United Kingdom who can offer both the accessibility and the atmosphere of a Northumberland Golf Course.

Of course, being one of the country’s more popular golfing destinations, there are numerous Pro Shops at various courses, so there’s no need to let a forgotten iron ruin your visit. Nor is there a need to hurry your game along, since the area is full of walks and sights for anyone who comes along.
